Prospectors

Together, the CMEB’s Chief Geologist and the Geologist provide technical assistance whenever required by a Cree prospector. The Chief Geologist is developing basic prospector training packages for use at the local level to increase the number of prospectors active in the territory.

Process

Prospectors from different communities have presented funding requests to the CMEB for prospecting projects. Below is a description of these various projects.

Mistissini Stromatolite

Mr. John has vast prospecting experience. His project – which involves around stromatolite, which are algae fossils – is new and unusual for the CMEB. The Board is open to opportunities to develop different mineral resources. Stromatolite is usually used in artistic applications.

Geology

The stromatolite in this project is around 550 million years old and is present in several rocks, mostly granite. These rocks are located in the area of the Cree Nation of Mistissini, and the site is easily accessible.

Baie à Roche Rouge Project – Mr. Morley Gunner from the Mistissini area

Mr. Gunner has many years of experience in prospecting. The Gunner Project is located in the eastern offshore of Lake Mistassini. In this project, the prospector is working under supervision of CMEB geologist Marlene MacKinnon. The prospected area is located around 90 km north of the Mistissini village on the eastern side of Lake Mistassini and in the Mistissini Eeyou Istchee Hunting Territory. Mr. Gunner’s project consists of stripping and sampling for gold, copper and zinc analysis. He already explores the area where he found an interesting amount of metallic minerals, specifically in mafic, volcanic and plutonic rocks. A black-and-white map was included with the project proposal that shows the area to be prospected and sampled.

Geology

The area is situated in the continuity of the Nottaway River greenstone belt on the delta formed by the pooling of the Rupert River in the Lake Mistassini region. This belt is composed essentially of volcanic mafic to intermediate piles and plutonic gabbroic and ultramafic rocks. The mineralization in this area is expressed by stratiform sulfides associated with mafic volcanic rocks. The presence of ultramafic rocks is a sign of a possibility of the presence of platinum-palladium and chromium mineralization. Furthermore, the sedimentary rock deposits in the Mistissini basin have a similarity with Metasomatic Type ore deposit, which very interesting for lead and zinc.

Lac Assinica Project – Mr. Harry Meskino and Mr. Simeon Longchap from the Mistissini area

This team of two experienced prospectors knows exactly what its prospecting objectives are. They found their property searching for mineralization in the field. The claimed prospected area is located around 200 km north of Mistissini and 50 km west of the Troilus Mine. The Chief Geologist has personally visited the property. They project to do basic prospecting work, with a grid, sampling, and some analysis. The area seems interesting for EPG and copper-nickel mineralization. A black-and-white map was included with the project proposal that shows the claims and prospected area.

Geology

The area is situated west of the Troilus gold-copper deposit. The latest is situated in the Frotet-Evans greenstone belt, in the Opatica subprovince of the Superior Province. It is a low-grade, high-tonnage deposit comprising several mineralized zones. Regionally, the rocks strike and are disposed in a series of southeastern-directed thrust sheets, which juxtapose linear belts of differing character. The area contains a considerable number of mineralized blocks which were analyzed for metal concentration and show interesting values in platinum and nickel. The outcrops in this area of Frotet-Evans greenstone belt show a suite of rocks of calc-alkaline affinity, in apparent tectonic contact with thoeleiitic lavas to the SE and mafic to ultramafic intrusions to the northwest. Lithological contacts and a strong penetrative foliation both dip steeply towards the northwest with a strong north-northwest-plunging extension lineation on the foliation surface.

Lac à l’Eau Jaune Project – Mr. Henry Salt from the Chapais area

The property is located 60 km south of Chapais. Mr. Henry conducted a drilling program on a copper-silver target with economic values. The claimed and prospected zone is located in an area where many mineralized sites are recognized. The Chief Geologist has personally visited the property. This project consists of drilling, sampling, and assays on sampled cores. The area has potential for copper, gold and silver mineralization. A black-and-white map was included with the project proposal that shows the claims and prospected area. The site of drilling is close to Mr. Salt’s camp, which has been used to receive the drillers, their materials as well as the diamond drilled cores. The proximity of the site to the camp resulted in significant savings for the project.

Geology

The area is situated south of the Chapais Synclinal and the Kapunapotagen Fault within the Chibougamau-Matagami greenstone belt. This belt consists of volcano-sedimentary piles that belong to the Roy and the Opémisca groups. The mineralization in this area is expressed by stratiform sulfides associated to felsic and mafic volcanic complex of des Vents Member and by large auric vein mineralization in shears zones. In the field, basaltic and granitic rocks can be observed, and their contact is in a north-south orientation. The massive basalts are rusted and contain large altered areas. The mineralization is currently in the drilling process.
